A Complete Guide to Cleansers…

The vast choice of brands as well as all the different types of facial cleansers can make quite a task of picking one. A good cleansing routine though can make a world of difference to your skin. It is the first and most important step of your skincare routine.

Clean skin plays an important role in the health of your skin. It prevents dead skin build up and clears debris from your pores avoiding congestion and breakouts. Cleansing all the dirt and impurities from your skin helps maintain healthy, clear, radiant skin. To make the most of your skincare routine, it is essential that your skin is well cleansed to start with.

There are many different types of facial cleansers on the market and each type has a different function. Below are are the three essential types of cleanser every woman (or man) needs for healthy, clear, smooth skin. I’ve also included my personal favourites of each type:

Daily Cleanser

Using a cleanser every morning and evening will help remove dirt, dead skin and impurities from your skin and keep it healthy. There are a tonne of different types of facial cleansers but you need to choose one that’s right for your skin. Soaps are a big no no and foaming cleansers can feel a little drying so are best for oilier skin types. Oil/balm/cream cleansers are probably most comfortable for drier skins whilst combination skins should look for balancing cleansers. Sensitive skins should always look for gentle, natural cleansers that won’t cause irritation. Eucerin DermatoCLEAN Refreshing Cleansing Gel is my go to daily cleanser at the moment. It is gentle, thorough, smells super clean and very reasonably priced. I use this as my cleanser in the mornings and as my first cleanse when doing a double cleanse on a full face of makeup. It is fragrance, alcohol, colorant and paraben free so is even suitable for the most sensitive skins. The cleansing gel cleans my skin without stripping it and leaves my skin supple and hydrated. I would imagine this cleanser would work well for pretty much any skin type.

Deep Cleanser

Every woman needs a deep cleanser for a double cleanse to remove every last trace of makeup. Whilst you can use a wipe or micellar water before your daily cleanser for a double cleanse, I find a deep cleanser to be much better for the skin. Of all the different types of facial cleansers, this is my favourite. The Botanics Hot Cloth Cleansing Balm (97% organic) is a deep yet gentle cleanser, perfect for removing every last trace of makeup. Massaging the balm all over my face (upwards motions only ladies!) feels so luxurious and removing it with a hot cloth feels super soothing. I tend to use this only when wearing a lot of makeup and after my daily cleanser. My skin feels clean, nourished, soft and smooth after thanks to the rosehip extract in the Cleansing Balm. The facial massage (read more about facial massage techniques here)also leaves me looking healthy and radiant so I love treating my skin to this whenever I can!

Weekly Exfoliant

In my experience, this is the most forgotten of the all the different types of facial cleansers. A good exfoliator is essential to smooth, even skin and can be done as little as once a week. You can opt for a physical exfoliator or a chemical exfoliator which is more liquid and usually swept over the skin on a cotton pad. My current exfoliator is the Botanics Radiant Youth Refining Microdermabrasion Polish. It rids the skin of dead skin cells that dull the complexion and boosts brightness. Formulated with Ginko plant extract, dead skin is gently sloughed away leaving the skin looking even, smooth and radiant. I use this once a week and it really keeps my skin looking flawless.

Be sure to always massage in upwards circles when cleansing and never to rub too hard around the eyes if you want to avoid lines and wrinkles. Happy cleansing lovelies!
